If a stream stutters in VLC but plays fine elsewhere, the fix is usually in VLC's preferences. The most important setting is network caching — how much video VLC buffers before it starts playing — followed by hardware decoding and the video output. Menu names below are from recent VLC versions on Windows; macOS equivalents are noted.

1. Increase network caching

Network caching is how much video VLC buffers before it starts playing, in milliseconds. A larger value gives VLC more room to absorb short connection dips.

  1. Open Tools → Preferences (macOS: VLC → Settings or Preferences).
  2. At the bottom left, set Show settings to All (macOS: Show All).
  3. Go to Input / Codecs.
  4. Find Network caching (ms) and increase it — for example from the default 1000 to 2000 or 3000.
  5. Click Save and restart VLC.

A larger cache means a slightly longer delay before playback starts and when changing channels. Increase it gradually until playback is stable.

2. Enable hardware-accelerated decoding

Hardware decoding uses your graphics chip instead of the main processor, which is smoother and more efficient.

  1. Open Tools → Preferences with Simple settings.
  2. Go to Input / Codecs.
  3. Set Hardware-accelerated decoding to Automatic.
  4. Save and restart VLC.

If you see green or black frames, artefacts or a black screen with sound, try switching this setting to Disable to test whether hardware decoding is the cause. See black screen with sound for more.

3. Check the video output

If video stutters on a particular computer, changing the output module can help:

  1. In Tools → Preferences → Video (Simple view), look at Output.
  2. Leave it on Automatic by default; if you have problems, try another option offered on your system.

4. Fix audio drift

If audio slowly drifts out of sync with the picture:

  • Press J or K during playback to shift audio by 50 ms in either direction (default shortcuts).
  • Use Tools → Track Synchronization for finer control.

Our guide to audio out of sync covers other causes, such as Bluetooth headphones.

5. Reset preferences if things get worse

If you changed many settings and VLC behaves oddly, reset them: Tools → Preferences → Reset Preferences (macOS: Reset All). Then apply only the changes above.

When settings are not enough

If playback is still poor, the limit may be your connection rather than VLC:

  • Run a speed test on the same computer.
  • Try a wired connection.
  • Test the same stream on another device.

Our guides to reducing buffering and Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet help narrow it down.

Testing whether a change helped

  1. Pick one channel that stutters and watch it for a few minutes, noting how often it pauses.
  2. Change one setting, save and restart VLC.
  3. Watch the same channel again for the same length of time.
  4. Keep the change only if playback is clearly better.

Settings best left alone

  • Very high caching values (many seconds) make channel changes slow and do not fix a connection that is too slow overall.
  • Changing many advanced options at once makes it hard to know what helped; reset preferences if VLC starts behaving oddly.
  • Disabling hardware decoding permanently on modern computers usually increases processor load; use it only as a test.

Frequently asked questions

What is the default network caching in VLC?

In recent versions, the default is 1000 milliseconds (one second).

Will higher caching use more data?

No. It changes how far ahead VLC buffers, not how much data the stream uses overall.

Why does VLC show "Your input can't be opened"?

That usually means the URL is incomplete, mistyped or not reachable. Check the link and your subscription status; see M3U playlist not working.

Raise network caching, enable hardware decoding and leave output on automatic. These three changes fix most VLC stutter on network streams. For the wider picture, see watching IPTV on Windows and Mac.
