This article is part of our guide Smart TV Streaming Explained: Built-In Apps vs. Streaming Sticks.
To watch IPTV on an LG Smart TV, you install a player from LG's built-in store — called LG Content Store on older models and "Apps" on newer ones — and add your access details. LG TVs run webOS, and a few LG-specific settings make a real difference to reliability. For Samsung models, see IPTV on Samsung Tizen TVs.
For the general steps that apply to all Smart TVs, see the Smart TV setup guide. This article adds the LG-specific details.
Before you start
- The TV is connected to the internet; Ethernet is best if the router is nearby.
- You are signed in to an LG account on the TV if the store requires it.
- Your access details (M3U URL or Xtream Codes login) are at hand.
Step 1: Update webOS
Open Settings → All Settings → General → About This TV (or Support → Software Update on some models) and install any available update. Menu paths vary by webOS version.
Step 2: Install a player
- Press the Home button and open the app store (LG Content Store or Apps).
- Search for "IPTV" or "M3U".
- Choose a player that supports M3U playlists or Xtream Codes, check recent reviews and install it.
LG's Magic Remote makes typing easier: you can point at the on-screen keyboard instead of moving with arrow keys. Many LG remotes also support voice input.
If no suitable player appears, see what to do when a Smart TV app is not available.
Step 3: Log in
Enter your details in the player, or — if the player works through a website — note the device ID or MAC address shown on screen and add your playlist on the developer's site. Double-check every character; server URLs, usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.
Step 4: Load channels and set up the guide
- Wait for the channel list to finish loading.
- Test several channels.
- Add an EPG URL if you have one — see adding an EPG URL.
- Create a favourites list for quick access, as described in organising channels and favourites.
LG-specific tips
Turn off Quick Start+ when troubleshooting
Quick Start+ keeps the TV in a low-power state so it starts faster. It also means apps are not fully reset when you switch the TV off. If a player misbehaves, turn Quick Start+ off (usually under General or Devices settings), switch the TV off, wait, and switch it on again.
Review the picture mode
"Vivid" and "Standard" modes can over-sharpen streamed video. Cinema or Filmmaker Mode usually give a more natural result. Our guide to improving picture quality explains which settings matter.
Check the connection type
LG TVs let you see network details under the network settings. If Wi-Fi signal strength is weak near the TV, consider Ethernet or a mesh system. See router tips for streaming.
Check Live Plus and ad settings
LG's Live Plus feature uses content recognition, and webOS also has ad personalisation options. Review them in the TV's user agreements and privacy settings; our guide to Smart TV privacy settings explains what they do.
Troubleshooting on LG TVs
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Player not in the store | Try other players, or connect a streaming stick |
| Channel list loads slowly | Wait for the first load, then restart the app |
| Video stutters | Use Ethernet, disable Quick Start+, restart |
| App not responding | Update webOS, reinstall the player |
More general fixes are in the IPTV troubleshooting guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sideload apps on an LG TV?
Standard LG TVs only install apps from LG's store. If a player is unavailable, a streaming stick connected by HDMI is the simplest alternative.
Why is my LG TV app store called "Apps" instead of "LG Content Store"?
LG renamed and redesigned the store on newer webOS versions. It serves the same purpose.
Does webOS support Xtream Codes logins?
That depends on the player app, not on webOS itself. Check the app's description for Xtream Codes or M3U support.
LG setup at a glance
On an LG TV, update webOS, install a compatible player from LG's store, log in and test a few channels. If the TV feels slow or the right app is missing, a streaming stick is a quick fix. For more context, read Smart TV streaming explained.
